My 33rd Birthday Vacation

Hey everyone thanks for tuning back in. Took me awhile to post about this, and it took me awhile to post in general. I've just been so busy with school, church, work, and also just figuring myself out. All that to say, I sorely needed a break. Luckily, for my birthday we were finally able to get out of town to 1) celebrate and 2) really reset my brain and my heart. So Charlene and I decided to getaway in San Diego! Shoutout to +DoubleTree by Hilton in Del Mar for making our vacation super relaxing. Their rooms are super comfy and we took full advantage of their resort style pool area~! Anyways here are some pics:

Comics for the Ladies

So working at amazing +Undercity Comics (Uptown Whittier) I get to talk to lots of nice folks about what's good in the comic book world. I also get to answer lots of questions, and the one of the most frequently asked questions come from our lady customers who are asking, "What are some good comics that have strong female characters, or are made for female readers?"
Unlike what the picture says, the tides are turning and women want to read good comic books that are more representative of society (which is not all male).
I love answering this question because:
  1. Girls are coming into comic book stores (well at least ours) and asking about comic books and asking for recommendations!
  2. The comic book industry is slowly starting to (finally) get some great female talent in writing and in art and starting to produce some great comics featuring strong female characters that aren't just written for women, but are just great comics in general.

Guardians of the Galaxy

So release weekend for Guardians of the Galaxy has passed by and already people are asking if Guardians is better than The Avengers. To which I would answer, "Read my review!" So here I am today reviewing Guardians of the Galaxy! And first, regarding the first question, I would say right off the bat, that this movie is the best movie that Marvel has released yet based on risk and execution of vision that makes the initial risk pay off BIG TIME, and that comparing the two movies isn't really a fair comparison (kinda like apples to oranges). But keep reading.
Even the poster for the movie is epic. Like Disco epic. Like when you strut to disco.

Hello comic fans! Happy Guardians of the Galaxy release day! Although Mrs. Nerd and I were very pleased to have watched it last night at the early release (which will be reviewed very soon), today I am featuring Guardians of the Galaxy #17 as the comic book of the week!
The cover shows guardians old and new

How To Deal With Change

So this past week, in getting a fever pitch created for Comic-Con, Marvel announced BIG changes to the Avengers empire. Also, this week our church had to deal with a BIG change which also has personal ramifications for me. Change can be disarming for anyone, and BIG changes can be downright nauseating. How one deals with change in a transitional phase of life can be determine much, but what does the Bible say about how to deal with the change?

You many know most of the Avengers in this pic, but introducing the new Superior Iron Man, Female Thor, and Sam Wilson (ex-Falcon), the new Captain America.

Superheroes and Bullying

Has it already been a month since I posted? Wow. Well this last month has been a pretty eventful one being busy with church activities (VBS, speaking for one retreat in San Diego, and my own youth group retreat ending just last Friday). Finally, all of my busy summer ministry activities are over. Praise the Lord for His many mercies shining His love on many, while providing me and Mrs. Nerd the strength to endure.

I also spent a substantial chunk of time away from +Undercity Comics (Uptown Whittier) as a result of my business and while I was gone I got to thinking about superheroes and what makes them popular. I think one of the big reasons why we like superheroes is because we like to fantasize which superhero we would be or which super power we would have. But I think another reason why we like superheroes is because they often times rescue us from troublesome situations. Yes there are the natural disasters that they might be able to prevent, but I am more referring to the rescuing of one who is unable to defend themselves. I remember growing up, being picked on for not being the right color, not being the right shape, and not having the right facial features, and just thinking "If only my neighborhood friendly Spider-Man were flying past this situation he would surely rescue me from these bullies."
Wouldn't it be nice to have someone to get you out of situations like this?
