Comic Book of the Week 12/18/13

Good evening Nerds! This week's CBotW is Indestructible Hulk #16! I have been just waiting for this comic too pick back up from the weird "Agent of TIME" story arc so that I could recommend this comic to everyone. Indestructible Hulk has been one of my favorite comics since Marvel NOW launched last year.

Indestructible Hulk once again follows the story of Doctor Bruce Banner and his smashing alter ego (pun totally intended), the Hulk. But this Bruce Banner is different from the Bruce Banner of the past. This Doctor Banner wants to no longer be known only for his appetite for destruction as the Hulk, but he also wants to give back to society to make up for all the years of Hulk smashes. That's where the "Doctor" in his name comes in. Banner surrenders himself to Agent Maria Hill and S.H,I.E.L.D. and in exchange for S.H.I.E.L.D.'s resources given to him to invent things that will better humanity, they get to use the Hulk as a cannon ball to point and shoot at their enemies.

This week picks up with Bruce just having gotten back into the lab from fighting through time and he has some inventing to catch up on. Mark Waid does a great job of showing the day to day frustrations of Banner from running out of funding, to getting out invented by Tony Stark and Reed Richards (yes by the both of them in one week, and its quite hilarious). All these frustrations get Bruce riled up and soon enough, he needs to blow off some steam Hulk style!

I love this comic because it's no longer about a brooding Bruce Banner who hates himself and the Hulk even more. This is a Bruce Banner who remembers that he is more than just the Hulk and starts giving back to society as what he was first known as, a doctor, and quite a brilliant one at that. Often times we forget about that, with Hulk taking most of the spotlight. But this is a much more assertive Banner bent on giving more back to humanity than he's taken.

Speaking of giving, I hope that everyone has had a chance to give a little extra to loved ones, or even strangers during the Christmas season. There are so many people who are in need, of time, money, and or love. Let's really correctly live out the meaning of the Messiah being born on Christmas Day. A new hope for all mankind.
