Guardians of the Galaxy

So release weekend for Guardians of the Galaxy has passed by and already people are asking if Guardians is better than The Avengers. To which I would answer, "Read my review!" So here I am today reviewing Guardians of the Galaxy! And first, regarding the first question, I would say right off the bat, that this movie is the best movie that Marvel has released yet based on risk and execution of vision that makes the initial risk pay off BIG TIME, and that comparing the two movies isn't really a fair comparison (kinda like apples to oranges). But keep reading.

Even the poster for the movie is epic. Like Disco epic. Like when you strut to disco.

2014 Movie Previews Part 2

Hello nerds! Hasn't it already been a great year for movies? I know that I am already behind on my movie reviews so that's how good this summer's movies have been. Stay tuned for my review on X-Men: Days of Future Past. But for now, let's look ahead to the movies I am looking forward to for the second half of 2014. I know my list doesn't include the second Planet of the Apes or Sin City 2 but honestly...I've never been a big fan of the Apes, and it's just been a long time since we've seen a Sin City and honestly, I wasn't a fan of the first one either. So you won't see them featured on this list, but that's only because I personally don't feel that strongly for them. Anyways, here we go.

Lucy

Mrs. Nerd and I were able to see the preview panel at Wondercon this year, and we are excited! Director Luc Besson was on hand to give additional details like how they didn't film the movie in chronological sequence (they rarely do). So they had a wall in Scarlett's trailer where they would put up lists with different percentages of brain capacity with abilities and characteristics that would be unlocked with each different percentage so Scarlett would know how she needed to act according to the shooting schedule. Anyways, the whole Scarlett gains the power to use more of her brain than an average person and she uses it to kick major butt (unlike Bradley Cooper's Limitless) totally piques our interest. Releasing July 25th.

Godzilla

The king of the monsters is back! In a movie that makes us all but forget 1998's Godzilla, This year's Godzilla returns the king back to his true form, a terrifying, massive beast that lives to hunt out other monsters and dominate them, all while us puny humans have no other choice but to watch in horror, shock, and awe.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Today I would like to commemorate the end of finals and the end of the 2013-14 school year by reviewing this year's second Marvel summer blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man 2(ASM2)! Ok to start off, I really enjoyed this movie. I know what's wrong with it, but there's much that's right with it also, so let's go with that first.

I heard that they changed the costume colors back to the traditional bright red and blue for ASM2 which is good in my book.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Hello superhero movie fans! It's time for my review on Captain America 2. I will just start off by saying that there is good reason why this movie is breaking box office records across the world. This movie is epic. Let's find out why.

2014 Movie Previews Part 1

Some friends and I went to go watch "300: Rise of an Empire" the other night (review to come) and the previews were chock full of trailers for awesome movies coming out this year that every self respecting nerd will have to see! I was so psyched after the previews so I just had to post on the movies we have to look forward to for the rest of 2014! Um...this is not an exhaustive list.

Noah

More than being a nerdy movie, it's a me movie. As a Christian I am incredibly curious as to how this movie will turn out and how Biblically accurate it will be. At least casting will not be an issue with Sir Anthony Hopkins, Emma Watson, and A Beautiful Mind alums Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly starring in the film. In theaters March 28th.

Robocop

Today I am once again showing up to the movie reviewing party "fashionably late" and reviewing Robocop. BTW did you know that in the original Robocop made in 1987, the future year that the movie was supposed to portray was 2014? So for the 25th anniversary of the original, Mrs. Nerd and I had a chance to watch one of her favorite action movies as a child and needless to say, this remake is not the same Robocop that you cult classic fans remember. That's not necessarily a bad thing.

Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer…You're Falling in Love With Them

The Guardians of the Galaxy are here! And they are hooked on a feeling, high on believing that you're in love with them. Yes the song in the trailer by Blue Swede is oddly appropriate for this ragtag band of cosmic misfits that no one in the Marvel Universe or OUR universe for that matter seems to know. 

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Yes it occurs to me that it may be a bit late reviewing this movie that's over a month old, but isn't it true that only after a month, we have all but forgotten that we had this movie viewing experience? What does it really say about the second installation of The Hobbit? This was the one big holiday movie that I saw, and I was expecting more from it after the somewhat mediocre showing that the first Hobbit had. Rearing up to write this, I was half nervous and half excited at the prospect of writing a controversial review on the movie (because I didn't think it was all that great), but I realized that stating that it wasn't stellar, and don't get me wrong I had fun watching it, but the sentiment of disappointment might not be so controversial after all. 

Was LOTR this forgettable?

2013 Fall Movies I Enjoyed

Hey everyone! Today I wanted to highlight three movies that I watched this fall season and really enjoyed, but didn't get a chance to review them in depth. With winter vacay coming and the second installation of The Hobbit (which I'm sure will be packed all weekend) releasing in a theater near you last night, I thought I could give you some alternative viewing just in case you haven't been to the theaters in awhile.

Thor: The Dark World

The other night, Mrs. Nerd and I went to watch Thor: The Dark World with some friends at the Irvine Spectrum in IMAX 3D. It was 52x72 feet worth of Asgardian gods kicking major butt. I really enjoyed this flick despite some naysayers out there regarding the weakness of the villain which I will address.

This time, Thor and company, are up against a returning army of dark elves who are looking for their WMD, which was locked away by Odin's dad after the dark elves lost in the last war against the Asgardians, in order to plunge the nine realms back into darkness.

The production value was clearly stepped this time around and just the look and feel of the movie felt not campy, but as real as comic book world with nine realms with one of them being a realm of Norse-ish gods could be. I guess the first Thor didn't have much to work with in settings since the scenes on earth were in New Mexico, but the scenes in Asgard looked sooooo cartoony. Having more settings to shoot in like different planets and realms as well as the backdrop of gloomy London really helped out BIG TIME.
