Jesus Loves Noobs: Mobile Fighter G Gundam

Hello fellow noobs! It's been awhile so hopefully y'all have had the chance to hope on to some of the stuff we introduced the last few JLN's and you're ready for something new. Today I want to introduce you to my guilty pleasure Gundam animated series: Mobile Fighter G Gundam! I say guilty pleasure because it may not rank up there as the best series but it's just fun, and at the end of the day isn't that what matters?

Protagonist Domon Kasshu with his assistant Rain Mikamura with the Shining Gundam in the background

Mobile Fighter G Gundam is set in the future where most of the earth has been destroyed through nations warring for control, and they've resorted to living on separate earth orbiting colonies. In order to determine who controls the world, all the nations participate in a Gundam tournament every 4 years (How sick would the olympics be if it were done by big giant robots?) with the earth becoming the fighting ring. The nation with the winning Gundam rules the world for the next 4 years.

Domon Kasshu is the main character of the anime who suffers the loss of his mother and subsequently his father and brother Kyoji when they create "devil gundam cells". Initially created for good intentions, Kyoji steals them and escapes to earth resulting in Domon's mother being killed and father arrested and put into cryogenic freeze. The only way Domon can save his father is to fight as the Neo-Japan representative. Luckily, he is also the successor to the Master Asia school of martial arts so he's a pretty capable guy.

Along with his childhood friend and assistant, Rain Mikamura, Domon goes to earth to participate in Gundam battles with other country representatives while also hunting down his fugitive brother. Along the way we reunites with old friends, and makes new ones in the Shuffle Alliance, while fighting the ultimate battle for love.

I love this anime because it's so sensational. Yes the music is cheesy, and the story is convoluted, but the action is great! Gundam's from every country duking it out in melee battle is such a cool concept and one that CG movies still haven't trumped just great animation on (I'm looking at you Pacific Rim). And the Gundams themselves are just so beautifully designed. Granted they take the stereotypical aspects of each nation and some how incorporate them into the design of the Gundam (the Neo-American Maxter Gundam is a mix between a football player and a boxer and Neo-France's Rose Gundam is a fencer), they're still cool.
Shuffle Alliance Gundams from top left: Neo-Russia's Volt Gundam, Neo-China's Dragon Gundam, Neo-Japan's Shining Gundam, Neo-USA's Maxter Gundam, and Neo-France's Rose Gundam.
So if you can get past the cheesy jazz soundtrack and kind of dated visuals, give this one a try! Because sometime's you just need a fun, action packed, old-school cartoon to relax and turn your brain off to, and Mobile Fighter G Gundam is exactly that and more!

Happy watching and Blessings~!
