Hey everyone! Today I wanted to highlight three movies that I watched this fall season and really enjoyed, but didn't get a chance to review them in depth. With winter vacay coming and the second installation of The Hobbit (which I'm sure will be packed all weekend) releasing in a theater near you last night, I thought I could give you some alternative viewing just in case you haven't been to the theaters in awhile.
1. Ender's Game
Ender's Game was a fantastic sleeper hit this fall and if you've never read the book (neither have I) it's about the future where earth first ravaged by extraterrestrial beings but some how are able to keep themselves from being defeated. Years later, the human race has learned from the Formic invaders and have drastically improved on technology and have started using young people as cadets in training to take on the eventual return of the Formics. The story follows Ender Wiggin who is super smart, but is also super street smart, which he means he knows how to deal with people and rally them to his cause. The movie really showcases Ender's character and his deep level of empathy which helps him in leadership and ultimately in defeating his opponents. I loved this move because it really shows off man's ability to do amazing things when they cooperate with each other. Sometime's Ender is forced to use force, but most of the time it's his cool and calculated demeanor, and restraint from reacting that helps him commandeer the respect of his fellow cadets and helps them become all together a very powerful fighting force. Watch it!
2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
The trailer for this movie looked amazing! I know that trailers in the past have been very deceiving with the actual movie sometimes being nothing like the trailer, but Catching Fire did not disappoint! Catching Fire continues the story of Katniss Everdeen who along with district mate/ pretend lover Peeta Mellark must tour the different districts as champions of the Hunger Games. But the oppressed people of the districts have started to fancy Katniss as a beacon of hope and as they tour, she and Peeta are witnesses to many acts of oppression. Push comes to shove when they visit their own district and Gale is involved in a conflict. As the whole nation is watching, the president plots a way to squash the inevitable insurrection by having a special edition of the hunger games with all the previous winners. This movie in general was just so much better than the first. The first movie didn't show the gravitas of the situation behind young teens killing other teens as a way to squash political unrest. This movie remedies this in spades and shows that you have to pick and choose your battles wisely, but often the biggest battle is against apathy and indifference.
3. Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor
This movie, which isn't really a movie per se as it was a Doctor Who special (of which there are a lot of), and will be the hardest to see in the manner intended by the makers because it's in 3D and it was only in theaters for a few screenings, but it has already been released on Blu ray 3D! So if you're lucky enough to own a 3D system (or have a friend that does) and are a Doctor Who fan, this is a must watch! The Day of the Doctor features three different iterations of the Doctor fighting against the same threat from way back in the Doctor's not well known past. This special was made in celebration to the Doctor's 50th anniversary and stars the latest Doctor, Matt Smith, the most beloved doctor, David Tennant, and the War Doctor, John Hurt. Together they go on the usual intergalactic, inter dimensional, adventure through time and space to save…spoilers~! You have to watch it. But the chemistry between the three actors is amazing and the story is brilliantly written. This movie shows the value of different people's experiences. In this case, it's the doctor's three different iterations at three different ages (younger and older) and their individually distinct experiences working together that makes this movie/special a home run.
Well there you have it! Three awesome movie watching experiences and they have great underlying themes also. Have you seen these movies? Agree or disagree with my pics? Any to add? Comment below. Otherwise, happy viewing!
Until the next time, may the Lord bless you and keep you.
Love all these movies! I'm a huge Doctor Who fan so the doctor who special was my favorite!
